It's been a loooong, looooong time, hasn't it?
Well, no need to talk about why I haven't been drawing.

That said, I'm filling up my sketchbook faster than I have before, though. On one hand - more drawings! On the other hand - more drawings I could be scanning in!

But I'm only scanning in a few of them.

So I was drawing with some friends over webcam, via Skype. The "theme for the day" happened to be "generic RPG characters." With that in mind, I started drawing a swordsman and a mage, but didn't get around to showing them what I'd drawn.

Well. Maybe this fixes that.

After I drew those two, I just went off and started drawing more in theme with the "generic RPG character" concept. This produced the dragon you see here. The only thing that bothers me about this guy is...his wing on the left side. I think it looks kind of scrunched.

Playing with proportions and disregarding them. I toyed with the idea for a villain and came up with this evil old man.

With this guy, Troy, I had an urge to make someone really tall. Someone lanky, tall and thin like a spear or lance. Too bad his outfit's sort of mismatched...

I took a break from drawing up characters and started drawing from photos off of flickr. It's fun to see what comes up if you search "bar" and "drinks." The parrot, sadly, was not a result of this search.

I learned that it's a pain to draw ice floating in liquid of various colors.

Then I drew up an apple from Google Images. A braeburn apple, I think. It was the first time in years that I'd drawn anything without relying on an outline. That's done all in colored pencil. I'd had a bad night after drawing the hamster, and that manifested in the monster you see there.

Then I returned to drawing more characters shortly after that. With the concept of an "elegant but powerful" prince, I created Lucas. I try to think that he doesn't resemble Cloud Strife in terms of hairstyle.

Now, with Lydia here, I'd first drawn her as the super-deformed, jellybean-shaped tiny witch you see in the bottom-left. But I "expanded" her into a more proportionate design, as seen on the right side. I blame Halloween coming up influencing me.

And then, I wanted to redesign the "RPG Hero" I concepted earlier. The swordsman I'd drawn up days ago I refined into Rudy. He looks...a little less generic. I think I should have put armor on both of his arms instead of just his left.

What bothers me is that, as I was uploading images to the blog, I noticed that the back of Rudy's head and the back of Lucas' head are similar.

And then, after redesigning the swordsman, I redesigned the Mage and produced Salena.

Salena is awesome.

Anyway. Not too much to show off this time around, but I've been doing some more playing around with sharpies and some pens that my brother brought home with him from Hawaii. Eight drawings total in today's update.

This was drawn...sometime last week. A week from today, actually. I wanted to draw something to cheer up my girlfriend while she was at work, so I drew the three most important Oresoren from Tales of Legendia. What better way could there have been? The drawing itself has nice, bold lines. I liked using the sharpie for this.

Then, earlier today, I was just doodling in the bottom half of the page, but...got lazy halfway through.

Sarah from my Rose Hero storyline. I played with the sharpie again when I drew her here. I'm pretty satisfied with how she looks in this page, except...something about the way I drew her leg and hips in the drawing of her running just seems off. Like the perspective and alignment of her legs is wrong.

This was just...well, pointless doodling. Toying with the sharpie more.

More sharpie play. I just gave up on this before too much time passed - it was starting to look terrible. The first panel does look very nice, though. I feel like I managed a good sense of action in it.

Aruna from my Rose Hero storyline. I rarely draw largely, and I also rarely draw close-ups of any characters. I gave it a shot here, using the sharpie for a lot of the lines, and...it seems like it turned out okay. Nothing too stellar, especially with the shape of the hair and the proportions of the head/face, but for once, it doesn't look like something that makes me want to die on the inside.

Also, colored Aruna looks waaaay too motherly, for some reason.

Rosa, also from Rose Hero. Playing with her design and drawing large(r) again. Something seems off about her proportions, and her hands also seem kind of wonky.

Richard, also from Rose Hero. Tried the same thing with Aruna, this time with arguably better results. The sharpie is amazing.

The drawing of him standing looks particularly impressive, I think. I stared at him and thought, "Wow, this looks really good."

This was...well, this was just for fun. So many things bother me about Aruna in this drawing - her back looks like it stretches backwards too far, her arm is a bit too long, and her hair looks like a mess.

But that aside, I did have fun drawing this. I play with ideas about Sarah and Aruna in my head.

Anyhow. I seem to be getting back into drawing more regularly. It's starting to feel a lot better, somehow.

Sky's the Limit

Anyway. I have no excuses. I haven't been drawing as much as I should be, so I don't have much to show for the extended period of no updates to this blog. However, I've scanned and collected what I've drawn between now and the last update, save for some trivial sketches and some...dirtier drawings. (Hahaaaaaaaa.)

WELL. UPDATE ROUTINE SET. EXECUTE:
This cross between My Little Pony and Tales of Legendia was drawn as a present for my girlfriend. The linework turned out quite nicely. And, well, even though I missed some details on Chloe's outfit (the girl sitting on the barrel), I think the picture's quite adorable.

Haha, although...I'm not sure if it's quite as entertaining to those who haven't been exposed to either of these franchises.

This sketch of Janus was sitting in pencil form for about a month before I added some ink to it, then I finally finished it up tonight - you can see some lines where I used sharpie for his linework. I think he looks pretty nice, although his arms seem a little long. And he does look...a bit plain.

Now, I'm posting some stuff here out of order, but...one night, when I was getting frustrated with drawing, I just grabbed a sharpie and started drawing things. Among the things I drew were Snake and Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 4. I also started using my rollerball pen for small details and shading more loosely, here.

Then I snapped.

And I balled up all of my frustration into this...terrible farce of a comic page. I used the sharpie for most of the linework, then just used the rollerball for details. It was about after this that I figured I could use the sharpie a bit more frequently in my work.

This was...I forget when I drew this, but before tonight, only the top portion was filled with material - the primary cast of Atlus' latest release, Catherine, with sheep bodies. Don't ask or think too much.

I filled the bottom portion with me conversing with a gentlemanly alpaca, influenced by a real life event from yesterday at the Clark County Fair where an alpaca and I made noises back and forth to each other. Alpacas hold a special place in my heart.

Rose Hero's female cast, drawn up on July 20th. I doodled this while tinychatting with my friends, and was fairly revitalized by how nicely a lot of the drawings had turned out. In particular, Aruna in the top-left, and Sarah in the bottom-right. This drawing predates the sharpie ones.

This drawing of the faces/heads of Rose Hero's main cast predates the My Little Pony and Tales of Legendia crossover fanart at the beginning of the post. I enjoyed how these turned out. The facial features seem at least...slightly differentiated from one another.

Then this was more recent. Until tonight, this drawing of a new design of Red Adonis was just pencil. So I took my rollerball and sharpie to it, and...well, I got this. Nothing in this really bothers me except for the drawing in the bottom-right, where I think the torso is a little long...

Some few weeks ago, I got an idea for a story that incorporated RPG archetypes and concepts into its universe. This is me taking some of the ideas for characters and drawing them out. This was also the first time I tried using the sharpie instead of my brush pen to get some line variation into my drawings.

That said, the sharpie lines seem kind of jarring here.

This one turned out much better, I think. For Rudy, a tenative main character who would draw on stereotypical Japanese RPG protagonist concepts, spiky hair was a must...and let me say right now that trying to figure out how to draw spiky anime hair from the side (when it points up and juts out to the side) is really difficult for me to try and visualize spatially. But in the end, this turned out nicely.

And in closing, there was this. A long time ago, I would just listen to music and draw whatever images came to my mind as I listened to a song. This was the result of listening to "sister" by Jpop group plane. I enjoyed interspersing sharpie lines and rollerball lines in this one.

I can feel the snow in it.

That said, I feel a bit refreshed in the drawing department after tonight. Let's see what happens.

Sunshine on Summertime

HAHA, I'M FREE FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

Anyway, I've got an odd variety of things to show off in this update. In lieu of school, I've taken it upon myself to begin drawing from photographs again...and then moving on to actually drawing from life. So first up are some studies...

The first of them: Nothing...too spectacular, here. I think I screwed-up on the arms for both of the women I drew here. Keanu Reeve's face is kind of weird, too. They look nice, though.

More women. I think these turned out better than that first page, save for those hideous looking hands.

I think this page is filled with fantastic things. The drawing of Yuki Kajiura on the left turned out swell, as did the woman on the right. The faces up top are all varying in quality.

HEY LOOK, COLOR. I think the only decent things on this page are the woman's face in the top-left, and the woman in the bottom-right.

SO NOW LET'S SWITCH GEARS INTO ANIMU MODE.

I realized I'd never scanned this in before, and it's many weeks old: It's a concept drawing for a character idea I'd been tinkering with for Rose Hero - Blue Adonis, complete with a terrible color scheme. It needs some adjusting.

HEY LOOK, COLOR: I'd drawn-up this page with the intent of doing a flat coloring job for part of it. Here we've got Red Adonis, represented roughly in color.

I have no idea how digital coloring works, and it remains a debilitating weakness.

The top of this page was just a quick observational drawing of the space outside of one of my classes this quarter. The rest of it...well, I don't know what it is. The drawing of Sarah slouched-down pleases my eyes, though.

SO NOW LET'S SWITCH GEARS ONE LAST TIIIIME~

So, last month (or was it early this month?) I was in a Tinychat with some friends I'd made back at Sakuracon. During the course of the Tinychat, everyone decided that we should draw pictures of each other.

So that's what I did. I gave girls tiny bodies and made them look like Mii's, or emphasized their favorite names for me.

I made Harry Potter a MANLY STORY FOR MANLY MEN SUCH AS MYSELF, and also made another friend a MANLY MAN CAPABLE OF MANLY FEATS SUCH AS CONQUERING THE UNKNOWN.

Seriously, man. Eyepatches. Eyepatches just make people look cooler.

And this...this is special. That's also a man, underneath all of that.

Blue Bird

Update title pulled from the opening to Bakuman's anime adaption.

Just a few drawings, this time around. School's...crunching down on me with the force of a wild animal's jaws. I can't wait to be finished with all my schoolwork. ;_;

Anyhow, everything in this update is Rose Hero related.

Doodles of Aruna and Black Iris: With Black Iris in particular, I wanted to see what her design would look like if I'd tweaked it.

...because I struggle to draw the ways in which a scythe can be used in combat, despite the wealth of videos I could probably find for it.

Drawings of the protagonist, Sero. I wanted to draw him transforming into his superhero alter-ego, which prompted the in-transformation pose on the left.

The one with the off-angle foot on the right side. Otherwise, I quite like it.

More protagonists: A lineup of Sero with Aruna and Sarah. While the outfits are all about right, Sero's face and Aruna's seemingly-disproportionate legs and stature bother me whenever I see this.

But the drawing of Sarah's face in the bottom-right corner pleases me. That's the sort of look I want to be going for when I draw my comic.

More of the main cast: Richard and Rosa. Richard looks kind of strange - his shoulders seem to be sitting a bit too low, and his arms look too thin. Rosa seems fine, though. Rosa's face in the bottom-right, with that smile, is something I surprised myself with.

...Sheesh, I should be catching these mistakes before I set the ink down, shouldn't I?

Role Play Game

Well, so I haven't been on a crazy, burning-hot drawing streak...but the drawings I've produced lately have been wonderful in comparison to what I usually generate. My poses feel...looser, lighter - easier to draw.

SO LET'S GOOOOO

Just drawings while I was lounging at my college last Thursday. Started off with a drawing of Belt about to punch someone, then I drew Aruna and Rosa wearing clothes different from their usual designs.

So-so stuff. Belt looks particularly awesome, if not for the odd placement of his arm that's in the foreground.

I was browsing a CERTAIN IMAGEBOARD's anime and manga board the other day, and someone was complaining about some of their work not being accepted someplace. One particular design felt like it'd be fun drawing, so...I took a stab at it.

I'll try to forget I ever drew this.

And this started as a mish-mash of random "NPC"-grade designs I doodled...then I filled the lower-left corner with drawings of Sarah, from Rose Hero's storyline.

I liked how a lot of things turned out here. Except for the guy in the bottom-right. The underside of his chin and his hands, wrist, and arm bothers me.

SPEAKING OF ARMS. I was talking with my girlfriend the other night, and she mentioned a concept for a character, and...well, long story short, it got me drawing a girl with arms being stabbed into her body whilst surrounded by many more. Not sure if this is quite what she had in mind, but I really like how the drawing turned out.

...the problem was, it only took up half the page, so I quickly doodled Aruna in its empty half.

Just drawings of various Rose Hero cast members. All of which look fairly nice. Except for Sero, down in the bottom-left. Ignore the malformed Kyubey.

The drawing of Aruna on the mid-right is something I'm quite proud of, though.

Well. That's it for this update.

...I really should just up and draw comic pages and roll with whatever I wind-up drawing.

Post title pulled from the lyrics of "Philistine," from No More Heroes 2. The song was stuck in my head for about an hour, today...and I don't even have it on my mp3 player.

Been a bit since I last updated. Had a speech in Public Speaking that dragged and bogged my schedule down. But now that that's done with, I should have a chance to draw some more.

I also went ahead and scanned what I had tonight...so here's what I've got!

So there was that story idea I had, spawned from the dream of the anthromorphic cat killing the anthromorphic cat king...I drew up more material for it. Specifically, I drew the king of that story, tenatively named "Crown."

Maybe he's a cat! Maybe he's a bear! Maybe he's a dog! Maybe he's all of those things! I like the way he looks, regardless...even if his proportions are sort of apelike?

There was a little girl I'd developed, an orphan girl whose tenative name is either "Tira" or "Tiramisu," depending on how silly I want to be. Not too much went into this.

There's also a sloppy doodle of a castle/tower on the left.

So, if the king is an anthromorphic cat-bear-dog man, then obviously, his knights must be anthromorphic sort-of animal-men as well! So this page was half spent doodling them.

And then we have Belt, from the last update, kicking one in the head.

The queen, tentatively named "Meringue," is human. So make of that what you will in your imaginations. I reconsidered how her face, hair, and head should look while I filled the page out, so I'll likely change her around some...and use better references for royal-looking clothes?

Also, as I inked her, my brush pen began running out of ink. That might show a little bit.

Lastly, I drew Belt again. I like how a lot of stuff on this page turned out, even if the proportions and perspective on a good handful of Belt's body is off. I think that at least the gesture is nice.

Anyway, that's all for now.

I had a busy, delightful, and all-around interesting weekend, but now I'm back with pencil and pen in hand, screwing eeeeeverything up in a new sketchbook!

So, down to business. Four drawings in this update -

I opened up flickr and began searching photos to draw from, with the intent of coming up with studies of people in street clothes. Obviously, I got distracted, and eventually drew a horribly-disproportionate police officer (?) in the center of the page.

But I like the man in the bottom-left. He turned out well.

So last night, I had this dream about an anthromorphic black cat killing a fat, anthromorphic cat king out of revenge, and learning strange things about his mother. After 10 minutes in the shower, I began producing ideas for a comic I could try drawing.

I'm no furry artist, and my knowledge of feline anatomy is poor, so I drew up this boy, tenatively named Belt, with a long belt hanging off the back of his pants in mimicry of a tail. I quite like him.

And then I drew...well, I guess...this guy is something of a prince? "Scarf," "Scarves," "Klaus"...I couldn't think of a good name for him. No idea what to make of this design so far.

And then, I wanted to draw this anthromorphic cat king. Not very much like the fat cat man I'd witnessed in last night's dream. I had this idea for a dramatic shot that I wanted to draw, so I rushed with practicing a mock-up of the king's design while doing some lazy doodles of cats using photos from the web...and then drew the red image at the top of the page.

Well, that about wraps up this update.

It's been a long time since I last updated. Over the past few weeks, (or is it, "past month?") I'd been hit with this draining, stressful sensation...a depression, I guess. During that time, I couldn't really bring myself to draw.

As a result, I didn't update. Obviously.

But as the weather's become clearer, so has my mood and mind. That's why I've got an update for you today.

This drawing of Rose Hero's cast was produced back before Spring Break hit...I drew it with the intention of practicing using different tones on each character's outfit, to see what worked best. That just didn't happen. Especially with how monstrously-disproportionate Rosa's body is.

This was drawn up...sometime last week, I think. Mostly just to show off Black Iris. I try to ignore Richard down in the bottom right.

But then each time I tried to draw, nothing but garbage came out. This is that garbage. Nothing too great here... Or at least, nothing like I wanted, anyway.

So, I figured I'd just do life drawings. As per the usual, I drew my left hand. These didn't turn out so badly, I think. Especially since I didn't let myself eat lunch that day until I'd filled the page with hands.

No lunch-deprivation technique in use here. Just drawings of my hand, plus some stuff out of the Nordstroms catalogue in my bookbag.

And just today I drew up, inked, scanned, and (sort of) touched-up this page. This page is proof of my good mood returning. The fact that I drew it, I mean.

...I can't render water at all. I need to overcome this.

I'll Take My Chances Here and Now

Not much in the way of an update tonight, thanks in part to classwork drowning me over the past week or so. I did, however, have the chance to finally scan-in and edit two comic pages I scribbled-up.

In a stupid and hypocritical move, I've decided to play with tones...but I'm not so sure I'm working them right. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I'm not applying them properly at all. I am, however, satisfied with how the linework for these pages turned out. I think I'm in need of some backgrounds, though...

That's about it. I sketched-up a third page, but got bored with it.

If anything bothers me, it's that the tones I used don't really show through on these images. They're too fine, I guess. I wish the patterns of the tones showed through. It might make Red Adonis seem less...dark?

Hopefully, I'll have more like this on the way, what with break coming up.

Dazzling

Post title sharing its name with the translation of a track from Star Driver's OST.

ANYWAY! I had a large chunk of time to myself to draw today...largely as a result of having nothing to do at school until 3:30 PM, and getting to the campus at about 8:30 AM. I sat and drew for maybe all but 30 minutes.

(Not like I have much to show for it, the way I draw, right? Right?)

This wasn't from today's drawing session. This was from a few days ago. Top is a drawing made from a lounge elsewhere on campus, made while waiting for my English 102 class. All but one of the faces in the bottom segment are drawn from a hairstyle magazine.

Faces from hairstyle magazines, a Nordstroms catalogue, and an Amtrak brochure. The old man in the top-right turned out best, I think.

Overall, I've been enjoying drawing out of that hairstyle magazine...although, I really should start drawing from life and not photos. >_>;

Anyway, the rest of the drawings are of characters from my Rose Hero story/plot. People checking in regularly with the blog should be familiar with these recurring faces...

Sketches of Sero/Red Adonis. I'm not too keen on how anything besides the bottom-left drawing turned out. Everything else looks...awkward. I'd have filled in the black or toned areas, but the pens I use for that have...dried-up. ._.

Various characters. Aruna and Sero on a dock, at the top. Aruna, on the left, seems...oddly-proportioned, and it bothers me. Maybe it's just the angle and perspective. Down below on the left was an attempt at redesigning Rosa with a new hairstyle, which I am very, very pleased with.

Sketches of Richard...nothing too special here. His sleeve in the top-left drawing seems like it's too...smooth? Lacking detail, I guess.

And then this is me playing with Rosa's new design. I'd enjoy the swinging drawing much more if her eyes hadn't turned out so strange-looking.

Overall, I'm feeling like I'm getting back into the swing of things.

I'm remembering the feeling that I need the most if I want to draw my best.

My, it's been a while. Sure feels good after cranking out 8 pages of the rough draft of a research paper in 14 hours, the day before it's due. But now that the stress of that stupid thing's gone, I feel free to draw without worrying about it so much.

SO LET'S GET THIS GOINGGGG
Just some drawings of photos out of a hairstyle magazine given to me by a friend. Ignore the disproportionate woman on the right, as Doodle-Me is already aware of the problem. I think the faces actually turned out great, though.

More drawing from magazines because drawing people sitting around me is nerve-wracking. The old man in the top-left is fantastic, I think. And the showgirl...well, something...seems off about her. I think she's disproportionate? Something about those legs...

And now we begin with my babbling about things that only make sense to a few people: Most of the rest of the post is character designs and brainstorms for my Requiem plotline.

Glyde, pre-timeskip. I've settled on colors for his jacket except for the end and that giant folded-over collar. His shorts have changed from previous designs, and now feature those...gems.

The evolution of Hotaru's design throughout the story, beginning from the pre-timeskip period to the end of it. Her post-timeskip design seems fairly plain, though. Like her outfit needs something else to it...

General character brainstorms, plus a drawing of Janus...who looks a fair bit like Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia, now that I think about it.

Character design drafts for Stella. Her original design veered too closely to Hotaru's pre-timeskip design, so I felt the need to rework her appearance...although, it isn't as though that's helped differentiate her from Hotaru that well.

Next are comic pages. Three pages are brainstorming for story points in Requiem, mostly dealing with Janus and Glyde fighting. One other page is included in this post, but is unrelated to Requiem.
Fairly satisfied with this one...except for the second/center panel. Glyde's legs and the pose that Janus is in could have been...better positioned?

This was drawn maybe a week after that page. The first panel here probably makes for bad follow-through with the action in the final panel of the previous page, but other than that, all this page needs is some BACKGROUNDSSSSSS

Post-timeskip battle between Janus and Glyde. Besides the poorly-drawn backgrounds, this page made me realize that I need to get a grip on how visualize the neck. Just look at Janus' neck in the second and final panels. I don't think necks work that way?

And this was drawn specifically for submission into my college's art magazine. Look at that, I figured out how to use tones after X number of years! I'm satisfied with everything in this page EXCEPT for the background. Look at the floor.

Augh, my God. Look at the floor.

Anyway, these don't count toward the remaining 24 images I need to meet last year's quota.

Long Long Ago 20th Century

It's been a long time since I updated, huh? Well, I've only scanned in a portion of what I've drawn recently, mostly because...

...I don't really know. I've been in a strange position where I haven't felt entirely up to drawing, lately. My pencil and pens have been moving across the pages of my sketchbook, but it's an empty sensation. There's no fulfilling drive resonating with me when I draw, as of late.

Regardless, I'll show what I've scanned in so far.

Sketches of an old king, for a story idea about a legendary crown. There's a comic page where I used this guy, later on in this post. I got several comments about how nice his face looks.

This looked...much better when it was penciled. I don't like the way it turned out.

The aforementioned comic page with the king in it. I liked everything in this except for that blasted last panel. The last panel is garbage.

Everything in this is garbage! The poses are so...unbearable to look at, and the foreshortening and perspective of the 2nd panel is wretched. The first one lacks a decent background. I only like the last panel in this one.

Anyway, fair handful of things this time. Been a while since I last updated, too. Eleven drawings total.

This was the brainstorming ideas for the style of clothes to be used in the Requiem storyline, as a counterpart to the male attire brainstormed at the end of the last update.

Hot on the trail of the brainstorming for general clothes were some character concepts.

And then I started listening to "Komm, Susser Todd," used from End of Evangelion. I firmly believe that it is the only song worth listening to in the event of the apocalypse. All should listen to their mp3 players and headphones as I do.

...and then Chrono Trigger material because it...well, nothing else fit down at the bottom of the page.

And then I took a break to commit to...a meager...poorly-done...single page of actual studies from nude photos.

...I...I have no excuses. ;_;

Then I began drawing things from Steambot Chronicles before being assaulted by ANGST.

...which turned out much more detailed than the Steambot Chronicles fanart.

And then the ANGST ANGST ANGST continued, with an intention to make several more pages, but nothing came of it beyond this. "What's the inside of my heart like," I asked myself. Then I realized how horribly distorted ANGST makes it.

And then I began listening to/watching clips from Code Geass' dub. One in particular got me started on this, and had me drawing it for the rest of the night.

This was brought on from reading bits about Klonoa on TV Tropes. There was a fair bit about how Klonoa, at the end of each of his games, always winds up vanishing from the world that he's saved, never to return to it.

...And I produced this.

And then I...well, the thought process is laid out here pretty clearly. I regret nothing.

This was to commemorate a refreshment of my mind.

The top half, anyway. The bottom half, and the next page, are part of an idea a friend posted in a comment to a status update on facebook...regarding me transforming into a Christmas ELF OF JUSTICE.

Anyway, eight pieces in tonight's upload. I'd have had two more, but I kept going back and forth between them, and would've taken too long to finish them in time for an update tonight.

So I figured I'd go with what I have right now.

Guess where I stopped caring in this one? No, really, just guess. Just guess.

That panel got really screwed up, so I made it NEVER GOOD. Saddens me a bit, since I liked the water and shell in the second and third panels.

(Also, ANARCHYYYYYYY.)

Holiday angst aside, I wanted to try get that orange-and-black color that urban areas have during the night. Sort of hit-or-miss here.

Also, I am at a loss as to how to render Christmas trees.

More angst, only primarily in blue and white. Don't really like the first panel in the bottom half.

Both this page and the last one went for almost a week without being colored or inked. I fixed that last night.

And designs for the Requiem storyline! Toying with color ideas and designs for Glyde and Hotaru.

Doing the same for Janus. Apologies in advance for the phallic electro-sword.

Note that all of these include a post-timeskip age.

This originally was going to be me playing with perspective and foreshortening (see the first drawing) but it eventually turned into quick colored sketches of Glyde.

Ideas for scenery and setting. An ancient mall, partially buried underground, being used as a town. I thought it would be cool: imagine, each area that would normally be a store gets converted into a small living space.

I think it would work out awesomely in a post-apocalyptic world.

And then brainstorming for clothing/fashion/etc. in the world of Requiem. I've got another page of this that I'm working on.

...it's kind of tough, trying to get a consistent look for it all.

WINDING ROAD

Anyway! A lot of drawings tonight. Lot of comics. Lot of color (more than usual, anyway) and more comics.

First up is the last request I got from the guy who asked for the gnome and chocobo and the war penguins: A panda with a squid gun. The squid gun wasn't...well, it was hard to conceive, so it kind of became less prominent than it should have been. I offset that with the octo-zooka.

You might recall from a few months or weeks back, I had that dream where I was fighting with this long-haired guy that may or may not have been some subconscious image of myself, and I drew him up. I decided to go along and make a comic of a fight between he and I, sans the banquet hall he and I fought in in my dream.

I just got caught up in drawing the second page after I looked at the last panel on the first page. But...the swing of the other guy's sword in the fourth panel on page 2 is so off that it feels ruined.

The first page also scanned poorly. :\ Oh well...

This was actually drawn before anything else here in this post. Eventually, it turned into me, drawing myself breaking into a laugh down at the bottom. I was working off of happy vibes from hanging out with friends while contained in a bathroom with them.

And also smiling on the inside from this song.

I was listening to the opening theme of Grandia, and was reminded of its opening FMV. From there...the scenery came out all on its own.

And as always, there is only one time of day: Sunset. THERE CAN BE NO OTHER ARRANGEMENT OF EARTH AND SUN.

So, in lieu of the quarter ending, and me becoming slightly more interested in bowling, I considered how I could go about drawing a bowling comic, with all kinds of gimmicky, stupid, silly BOWLING POWERS being used. I got bored fast, and drew up fruits in business suits instead.

But then I drew this bowling comic. I liked how each panel turned out, except for the three in the bottom-left: I think the eye close-up could've used a different expression, and the bowling ball is...lopsided in that penultimate panel. I think I could excise it entirely.

Inspired from a doodle in my last update: Sarah, with an umbrella. I liked how this turned out - just a quick doodle to color.

And then characters from a friend's project that I want to make into magnets.

More of his characters. My continuing struggles with females continues as I give them giant hips or butts.

...Not one of th brighter points of my sketchbook in the bottom-right, but the left side's fairly rockin'.

Comic practice, and brainstorming for the Requiem storyline. This was inked with the intention of being colored. The only thing that really bothers me is how jarring the blue sky looks in the panels it appears in. I should've looked at more reference photos of the sky at sunset.

Because, remember: THERE IS ONLY ONE ARRANGEMENT FOR THE SUN AND EARTH.

And then I had to study for my bowling final. Yes. My vocabulary and bowling knowledge test. I figured one way to study would be to DRAW A COMIC THAT INCORPORATED ALL OF THE INFO I NEEDED.

That was impractical and stupid, but hey, I got two comic pages out of it...even if the bottom of the first page is drowned in speech bubbles and the second page has some weird angles and anatomy and perspective going on.

SO ANYWAY. 12 DRAWINGS TONIGHT.

You Are My Only Shooting Star

Today's post title has been pulled from the ending song to Star Driver, "Cross Over."

ANYHOW. Eight drawings tonight. That's two or three less than I wanted, but...well, I dunno. Might have to do with me using color in almost everything. May have taken up more time...

So anyway. First three drawings are from photos pulled off of Flickr. The last color pair came out of a Nordstroms catalogue I'd been carrying with me for a long while.

And then I kept using the Nordstrom's catalogue, and bastardized proportions and the female form. The only drawing I like on this page is the one on the far right. The rest look like horrible monsters.
Oh, right. Remember the guy I talked about in my last post, who requested the WAR PENGUIN? He requested a garden gnome riding a chocobo last...wednesday, I think. This one turned out nicely. I should draw larger more often.

And then this. You know the Giga Drill Break attack from Gurren Lagann? I wanted to draw a parody of it using Mega Man for a while, and...then this. Only thing I don't like is the placement of the second speech bubble. It should be closer to panel 3, I think.

This was mostly drawing from photos off of Flickr, although I kind of screwed both drawings up, anyway...Gave me a chance to play with colors, too.

This page started with me asking myself, "How do the faces I draw faces look if I try to draw them larger?" And then it quickly turned into, "Oh God, this is horrifying, I'm going to draw a tiny night scene and play with colored pencils."

AND THE ONLY COMPLETELY BLACK AND WHITE IMAGE. This was mostly used for brainstorming designs for "Gods." That, and trying out different faces.

And this was for brainstorming a story idea I had tonight. I leave it chronicled in my sketchbook and this blog for future reference. I also marveled at the semi-passable "snowy mountain at night" in at the top of the page.

So...eight drawings. Last I checked, we were at 302 drawings.

We have now reached 310 drawings total.

I should have 332 by today, though. I'm behind by 22.

...There's only so much time until the end of December. ._.

King of Solitude

Post title pulled from the name of a personal favorite of Chihiro Onitsuka's songs. (Warning for a video of the song that automatically plays on that page.)

Anyway! Lots of images, tonight. Most of them are a result of work for a contest being run by Capcom for Mega Man Legends 3... and I mentioned it in my last update. Read it there. I got my design finalized, and here it is!

The Kafer...Kaefer...Bohrer. It taught me that I don't know how to use paint programs to color anything.

And here we've got details on how it looks on the bottom and top, how its legs work...I had fun thinking these things up.

Here, in diagrams A through G, I've got doodled the mecha's various attacks...plus how it uses its legs to crawl up walls and walk around on the ceiling.

So in the process of designing that thing, I took the first design I sketched up in my last update, and began modifying it. The design I began work on right after that is pictured here. I gave the mecha two drills, and a set of turrets/guns on its underside. (Gun udders? Gun udders.)

I kept working on it... but when I looked back to the original design I drew, I scrapped this "version 2" update to the design, and modified its original design to produce the final "version 3" design.

This page had ink-drawn doodles of the mecha's attacks, and leg detail of version 2, but...neither was used. The leg extension illustration here seems...more detailed than version 3's.

So, besides that, I've got some material I've drawn for Rose Hero. I realized that I didn't have much in the way of designs for the mechanical enemies that I want the heroes to fight, so I drew some up one day before working on version 2's design.

Ideas for the police in the city that Rose Hero takes place in...amongst other things.

Sketches and ideas for Van, another Rose Hero character. There's also a possible doodle here for his "home."

Scene brainstorming, brush and comic practice...Rosa's face in Panel 3 got screwed-up when I tried to render the eye on the right side. I also didn't plan anything out beyond the first four panels, which lead to an awkward scene, I think.

"Wow, I can't draw action poses. It's tough to draw the moment of impact, or the moment after an attack." That's what I thought, then I drew this.

And then I hastily began drawing this just to fill a page. I like the weird, creepy guy in the top-right of the page, there. His gesture pleases me. The sequence of images in the bottom-left are what I do as I read stupid things on the internet.

And this...this is a War Penguin. It came about when someone at college asked me to draw a War Penguin riding a Panda. The penguin turned out well, but then...I couldn't remember what the Hell a panda looks like. I messed the panda up, but I like everything else, including the Kiwi-riding War Penguin.

ANYWAAAAY, counting the two attack illustration images as one drawing, I've got fourteen drawings for today.

So, that brings us up to...302 drawings.

I should have 325, though. So I'm behind by 23.

I'm getting there. Catching up slowly...

Post title pulled from the lyrics to the track, "Joey and Heroman," from...well, Heroman.

I'm making progress with this update. Three drawings ahead of the daily quota, which means three more towards not being behind!

Although, haha, I actually posted this, then as I'm editing it right now, I'm typing the usual text in. I just wanted the original post time to be kept in the post.

Anyway, the first two drawings, this one and the next, involve a contest Capcom's running for Mega Man Legends 3. Essentially, it's designing a mech that'll be used by the game's antagonists, the Bonne family, as they fight Mega Man. They even provided some context for the mech, too: It'll drill into the area where it's fought, there'll be water in that area...and some other bits.

So I got caught-up on the drill part. The first one I drew is that caterpillar-looking mech up top. I'm not entirely sure how it would attack, unless it can stand on its hind legs and have its drill feet pop forward into you as you run around it.

The second one that resembles a pirate monkey with a gun-pacifier and drill wolverine claws...well, I got stuck thinking of how it would move, and it lacks feet/wheels.

And the next two I drew up had more drills. They don't feel very Bonne family-ish, though. The one up top came second, and had a snake-like body that it moved with. A giant drill backpack is on its back.

The one below moves on treads and has two giant drills that can open up to act as cannons. The frog mouth at the front raises up to reveal a place where the Bonne family can taunt Mega Man.

This was drawn before either of the mecha designs: They're just design and expression practice for Rose Hero's cast. Rosa's design is still kind of up in the air, since I don't know what to do with her hair or face.

And this was...just doodling and practicing. I brought my brush back out, but its bristles kept fraying as I inked my sketches. As a result, the line quality in a lot of places is much different from what I had desired.

But then when I used the brush later, it started to behave the way I wanted it to. Under the influence of certain sequences from Panty Stocking and Garterbelt, I felt compelled to try draw the female form stylistically. The results are...somewhat chaotic.

And that was supposed to be a swimsuit. Not some...weird dominatrix outfit. Ugh, oh God.

This was sketched up after I'd drawn the robots from my last post on the blog, but I never inked it until last night, and finished it this morning. I wanted to try a falling/flying action sequence several times in the past, and I finally re-attempted it here.

Mixed results. The last "panel" with Red Adonis and Rosa, in the bottom-right, wasn't planned too well, what with Rosa's legs being cut off by the panels preceding it...

And this started as doodles of Akumetsu. However, after being influenced by Bartender's ending song, I started drawing that bar scene. Used the brush again, and...I think it looks pretty good.

Seven drawings in tonight's update.

That bumps us up to 288 drawings total.

But I should have 317 drawings by today.

Do what I want, and I'll do it my way

Anyway. Only seven in this update, but I figure I'll get them out of the way that way the next update doesn't take so long.

This is the drawing that sits on the last page of the sketchbook that I'd been using since mid-July. I used the brush for everything but the last drawing that I threw-together because I wanted to finish that page off. Pictured along the top are the three protagonists from the stories I've given the most time to lately.

...Yes, I'm that self-absorbed that I draw myself like this. The narcissism is practically bleeding through my ink.

And then I finally filled the first page of that sketchbook, filling it completely. And hey, look! Hands. Not that the first hand on the left is any good, though.

And then I christened a new sketchbook with this drawing, doodling ideas for Vampires, mostly. I really liked how the first of those three comic panels turned out.

And this one went untouched while I worked on a report for two days. I returned to the page while using a dipping pen tip that I hadn't made use of in months.

And I loved the line quality it gave me.

And this...just ignore that second panel. It turned out terribly. The pose I nailed down for Red Adonis in the bottom panel, with the sword out, looks nice if you ignore the disproportionately-long arms.

Just pay attention to the biological abomination and the Squid Mage on the right.

Messing around with the crow tip dipping pen for the greater amount of the page. I liked the expressions on Sero and Rosa's faces up top, and the pose that Aruna's lying down in over at the middle of the page.

...Richard, down at the bottom-left, just looks...wrong. Oh well, can't say I...didn't try.

And this is just brainstorming for mecha ideas for use in Rose Hero.

Chances are that I'll be drawing a lot of robot ideas soon, since Capcom recently announced a contest to design a machine that'll be featured in Mega Man Legends 3. Considering that the majority of my robot designs are heavily influenced by Mega Man Legends, I think this...works out quite well.

So anyway. Seven drawings, yeah?

That bumps me up to 281 drawings total.

I should have 313 drawings by today, though.

So I'm behind by...32. No progress made on catching up with this update.

Just means I have to get into gear even more.

Under The Radar, I'm Reaching For the Sky

Homework getting in my way. Homework stopping me from drawing more and catching up.

OH WELL.
Scene brainstorming and comic practice. Despite the building not exactly being...clean in terms of line quality, I like the way it looks. Also, multiple angles! I'm getting somewhere.

Just scribbles and doodles. There's more Capcom in this page than there is Sega. I've never been good at fanart, as I've said before, and Sonic is...kind of tough to draw. I can't figure his eyes out, and I keep giving him wonky expressions half the time. So much blue, though.

Quick sketches and brainstorming for villain designs. I should take a look at military uniforms, or something, and revisit these ideas.

More scene brainstorming and practice. I have a really hard time trying to depict action, which is what started me on drawing this page up...then the quality goes right down to Hell. That aside, I like the way the first panel turned out. I think the impact of the lead pipe comes across well.

I was listening to the final boss track from No More Heroes, "We Are Finally Cowboys," when I drew the first part of this page. That particular track always made me envision a scene like that - everything painted orange from the sunset, the hero riding valiantly atop a motorcycle...

Anyway, my head was still stuck on depicting action, so that birthed the rest of the page.

Brainstorming and design sketches for Rose Hero's villain. His hands look kind of weird in the bottom-center sketch.

Design ideas for the cowboy I'd drawn up several times before. The two bottom poses were drawn with loose, undetailed pencilwork, so they're...kind of off.

Many of these poses were drawn with the same procedure.

This was penciled weeks ago, and the page actually had a full sequence of panels on it before. Wanting to fill this sketchbook up completely, and not wanting to go with what I penciled before, I erased most of the panels and filled the rest of the space with doodles...only the bottom-right one being what I felt satisfied with.

This was penciled a week or so back, too. The strange thing about it is that as I was penciling it, I was instant messaged by a Knives cosplayer.

...I think it's safe not to ask anything about this one.

SO YEAH. That's ten drawings in today's update.

Drawings-a-go-go, baby!

Holy hamster crackers, Batman, I'm updating this twice in one week!

There's even color in one of the images! Oh my, how unusual.

From Friday: Rose Hero's main cast, with the spotlight on Sarah dancing. I colored this in some pretty poor lighting, so I'm not entirely sure how well that it turned out...

I really liked how her pose turned out, even if her arms may be a little too long. The one in the back seems to have an abnormally-long wrist.

Design doodles of Black Iris. I'm still trying to get her appearance closer to her original concept sketch that my friend provided me so many years back.

I also changed the scythe's appearance, among other things. No black/shading for the sake of me being able to see folds and the like without screwing things up royally.

Design doodles of Sero, the main character. In the past, I'd draw his hair according to a mental formula, so it'd always have a rather inorganic look... I'm seeing how things look if I ignore that voice in my head and just draw it without that formula in mind. (Something like, five points of hair in the front, five in the back, or such...)

I think he looks more lively and flowy than I've ever drawn him in the past.

...but that drawing of him with his hand outstretched looks Hell-weird. My grasp of perspective still needs work. (Haha. The hand looks weird. "Grasp of perspective." Hahaha...)

More scene brainstorming and comic practice. Now with marginally-more backgrounds than past updates. I had penciled this back on Thursday, but never got around to inking it until tonight. The fifth panel's really all that bothers me, since Aruna's hand against her cheek is...I just didn't draw that right.

Useless trivia?: I redrew the last panel three times before settling on a pose for Sero.

Alright. Four drawings today, and we're bumped-up to 264 drawings total.

I should have 297 by today, though.

So I'm behind by 33. That's one less than before, but it's still progress toward catching up.

Haha...Early into the blog, I counted any drawing that I did for a day as one single drawing. That changed into "one page of sketchbook or one page of drawings from anywhere" equals one drawing toward my count. Makes it more difficult, but it feels good.

Monsters, Demons, and Graphic Design

Interesting update with a variety of things, today.

...some schoolwork's mixed in here as well. Although, I don't know if that's worth much toward my count.

Anyway, kicking things off: I had penciled this drawing of the main cast of Rose Hero in their superhero alter-egoes over a week ago, and never got to inking it. Eventually, I got around to it...after erasing Red Adonis from the top-left corner and redrawing Black Iris (top-center) to better reflect her original concept art.

It looks...pretty nice.

So I drew those monsters last week, yeah? This page started off with the intent to draw nonsensical fantasy weapons, but then I began listening to Shin Megami Tensei battle music, and started sketching that snake guy down there.

He looks awesome, I think...even if the front of his skull is apparently shaped like the pope's hat.

Another monster and some Halloween-themed doodles. With Jack and Jill, the pumpkin children, I'd wondered if they'd look more creepy if I'd made the inside of their jack-o-lanterns black, with only glowing dots for their eyes...but I figured if I left that space white, I could play with either look.

As for that monster in the bottom-right...The basis for it was a man's body with the legs and arms twisted/bent backwards. As for its tail...

...well, I did say the basis was a man's body.

So now we have four images of sketches for my latest assignment for graphic design.

The assignment was to produce four types of imagery for three different qualities about ourselves. We needed one literal, concrete, iconic, and abstract image each to communicate each of those qualities. The qualities I'd selected were "Curious," "Unusual," and "Spirited."

...Most of the sketchwork here was for the concrete imagery of those three.

More work for mostly concrete imagery. Some ideas for abstract for sketched at the bottom half.

This was retooling some earlier iconic and concrete imagery. After I scanned the images I decided on, I spent a while cleaning them up or altering them in GIMP.

Altogether, I'm counting these four as three images...since the first and last images in this little selection don't have much content.

And then, with that out of the way, I got to work on more monsters. The female monster in the top-left was drawn while under the influence of the "Bloody Destiny" track from the remake of Persona. Everything else just flowed out afterwards...although, the tophat dinosaur is based on the same idea used in the iconic imagery exploration page from earlier.

And then we arrive at today. I just began doodling nonsense, and...well, nonsense is what we got. Then there was some empty space left over, and I filled it with super-deformed Mega Man and Bass.

That said, I began wondering: I rely a whole lot on how detailed my sketchwork is before I ink. I'm considering trying to draw with rougher sketches with less detail in them, then inking over that from the get-go. If that makes any sense. I'm going to be experimenting.

ANYWAY. WHATEVER.

We've got eight drawings total today.

That bumps us up to...260 drawings.

But by today, I should have had...294 drawings.

I'm behind by 34, but that's a lot better than being behind by 40.

Monsters and Flowers?

Look at that! Updating again.

More Rose Hero material sprinkled with machines and monsters.

This page began as an effort to draw someone wearing chainsaw pants. Yes, chainsaw pants. Eventually, I decided the design for the chainsaw pants looked unattractive and stupid, so I erased it and drew a pizza cutter robot instead.

I actually drew the robot's pilot into its design fairly well, too. I liked that.

This followed after I finished the pizza cutter robot page while I listened to this song from Chrono Cross. Eventually, it turned into scene brainstorming and practice for Rose Hero. The only thing that really bothers me about this page besides the lack of backgrounds is Richard's hand in the first panel. It looks like it's about to fall off.

...not that that would be out of place in this scene, mind you.

Also, I got lazy and used pencil for toning certain areas. My apologies for cheapness.

The three girls from Rose Hero's main cast, from left to right: Rosa, Aruna, and Sarah. I liked how this turned out when I penciled it, and I was afraid of screwing it up when I inked it, so it took me a while to get around to that. (I think I actually finished this one at 2:30 AM this morning...Oh well.)

The page looked pretty empty still, so I drew a small two-panel scene of Red Adonis catching a giant steel ball with his hands down below.

Yesterday, I had a few hours to myself, and decided to draw monsters, beginning with the figure with the three dragon heads. I'm incredibly proud of the mask with multiple hands/arms jutting out from it. Even if it...is far too similar to the shadows from Persona 3. The dizzy drill, the column with multiple eyes, looks nice to me, too.

I continued later that day by drawing out an idea for a scene that popped into my head regarding an invasion of aliens made of...some form of energy, smashing into the Earth en masse in the form of a meteor shower.

Then I drew up that wonderful creature to the right of the page.

This one I finished only moments ago...only out of the desire to fill a sketchbook page before midnight because I've been lethargic all day long. I wanted to draw the Rose Hero cast, so I went about doing that after doodling the robot and ship at the top of the page.

I should play around with different ways to render these guys, though...

WELL, ANYWAY.

I'm...I swear I'm keeping up with the work at hand.

Let's get the reels rolling.

This page hadn't been inked for several days after it was penciled. Well, the sketch of Aruna, over on the right, was inked quickly, but the little montage on the left hadn't been inked for a while. I'd scanned it in while penciled, and began coloring it...but then I decided to ink it, then scan it in for coloring.

Aaaaand here's the result. I learned, in the process, to not let myself near paint programs ever again without first practicing and experimenting more with the paint program in question. (PARADOX MUCH?) I spent maybe...7 or 8 hours, mostly on Saturday, coloring this. The way everything is shaded just looks...bleh.

BUT LOOK! COLORS. I'm proud of myself for...sticking to this self-assigned assignment for such a long time without giving up? (In the event that the thumbnail isn't linking to an image, click here.)

Yes, I'm counting this as a separate drawing from its linework.

Brainstorming and playing with the characters for Rose Hero. It's a lot like toying with action figures. I think it turned out fairly well. I used the brush only for people/objects in the foreground, and used my pilot pen for most of the rest of the lines. Sorry if the handwritten text is...horribly unreadable.

Character designs for some villains in the story. I realized I hadn't really updated these two in a while. Cronie's face needs to be rendered differently, so that it isn't solid black on his paper bag face.

More of the two from above. A demonstration of Cronie's power to manipulate paper into whatever shapes he wants. The third panel...was supposed to be the formation of the Paper Dragon's head/mouth, but I think that didn't come across too well.

Again, Cronie's drawn-on paper bag expressions seem...distractingly-bold.

OH GOODNESS. STUDIES. I knew I could still do those.

Now why do I like that sketch of Kubo Tite's face the most on this page? I mean, the woman in the upper-left is nice, but...

Roses and Heroes

Haha, I...I have at least one drawing to account for all the days that've passed since I last posted, but I've spent (and will be spending) a little longer on one drawing I didn't include in this update.

That said, there's a lot of content for Rose Hero in this update.

Originally started as an action scene, after I'd drawn Sero's face in the first panel. My brain stopped working for ideas for an action scene, and then it turned out like this. I'm...fairly proud of how the last panel looks. I struggle to draw people sitting down on things.

That same night, I had trouble drawing people in poses that looked organic and flowy, so I resolved to draw robots instead while listening to music from Zone of the Enders 2. I think it turned out fairly well. I enjoy drawing robots. >_>

...But that one that's just a torso looks...kind of...sexual?

More brainstorming and practice for the Requiem storyline. I planned to draw a more natural, jungle/amazon-esque landscape with a waterfall at its center, but the waterfall instead turned into the water flowing out from a broken, ruined dam.

I inked this mostly with the .02 micron pen. For what it's worth, I think it looks nice. I rarely use a whole page for a single drawing...I should change that, soon.

This is me throwing up comic panels onto a sketchbook page while vaguely maintaining some semblance of the plot I have written down in word documents. I like the expressions here, even if I more-or-less half-assed everything on this page. Dialogue included.

This is me still vomiting comic panels onto sketchbook pages. I started sketching poses for Sero/Red Adonis at the bottom of the page when I began to become more aware of the fact that I still struggle a great deal with depicting people moving into the foreground. How that translates into action poses, I'll never know.

I do like the panel in the bottom-left, though.

A few days ago, I recorded a mock introductory narration to a story I'd concocted in my head only 30 seconds prior, titled "Star Ranger X." It had a really simple and straightforward, childish feel to it, and I really wanted to draw up designs for it, so...here we are.

Do you see that mechanical star, and how it transforms into a STAR ROBOT? Despite how it looks like it may have been torn out of Dexter's Laboratory, I quite like it.

So, anyway. Six drawings here.

Brings us up to 240 drawings total.

More Metal Than Flesh

It's true. There are more robots than there are humans in this update.

But hey, look at that, I'm updating.

More character designs. It's Glyde again, from the Requiem storyline.
...I feel really iffy about the proportions. My brain apparently wasn't working when I drew those arms and hands.

More material for Requiem - designs for a mobile Artificial Intelligence unit. I'd scribbled up ideas for them before, and they were cylindrical, but the spherical design just seems more fun.

Even if the spherical design looks a lot like those black Pokeballs that Mewtwo creates in Mewtwo Strikes Back. Oh well. I can live with that. Especially when I have a robot with a metal sombrero in the upper right of that page.

CELEBRATING THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF SOMETHING AMAZING. MegaMan Legends 3 celebrations all around.

And subsequently screwing up proportions when I whine about Namco-Bandai making stupid localization choices regarding certain franchises.

Material for Rose Hero. Not sure if it really counts as brainstorming. This was more of just practice: drawing up a comic page for the sake of...drawing up a comic page. The dialogue's pretty bad, too.

I should really write some stuff out before I do this. It might turn out a lot better.

It's bothered me that when I picture grandiose, printed graphic novels of my work in the future, I don't have a concrete concept of title artwork. So I started playing around. The first logo at the top is more-or-less the same as the one that appeared on my senior project. The other two are totally new.

Meanwhile, I drew up the main cast on the left of the page. I think they look...pretty nice, actually. I'm proud. :D

ARE YOU READY TO THE ACTION?

Sorry about the title. "Modern Strange Cowboy" has been playing in my head all day.

Anyway. It's been a long time since I've updated, hasn't it? I'd wanted to keep drawing after the convention was over, but I seemed to be in some sort of mental shock after incidents piled-up on each other immediately following the convention.

BUT REGARDLESS. MY GREAT REVIVAL IS AT HAND.

So yeah. This first drawing was just playing with designs of characters from my Rose Hero storyline. It was...the only drawing/page I completed in about a week. Just used a rolling ball pen for it.

Pictured above is how Tanner punishes himself for moping about and being unproductive. Notice that this drawing is dated ten days after the previous one. It was the first time Tanner tried to do linework with a brush after a period of mental shock, and the effects of it show.

LOOK AT THOSE MESSY LINES, OH MY GOD.

I think this was actually penciled prior to the convention, but only inked in the time following the previous drawing. I didn't want to use black to fill in space in the pages except for a few elements...so I used a black color pencil instead. Eh. So-so results.

This...this page was an oddball. It started as more world-building for my Requiem storyline, but...then it turned into fanart.

It's also the only bit of color I've used in months. That should worry me, right?

More world-building and brainstorming for the Requiem storyline. Brush was used for linework on everything but the mechanical cylinder. I enjoyed how the poses in the two panels in the top-right turned out.

MOAR WORLD-BUILDAN AND BRAINSTORMAN

HORY SHET! I still do life studies? I really should still do life studies...especially since they fill up my sketchbook faster, and I can reach my quota faster.

I still think the fully-extended hand looks a little odd. That was the only one that gave me trouble.

See that guy with the long hair? I fought him in a dream I had, and it compelled me to try and draw him. See those weird swords? We fought each other with those swords. See that weird party setting, filled with handfuls of partygoing guests? We fought each other there.

It was an awesome dream.

And this is a character sheet for my Requiem storyline, for Glyde, the main character. Here's to hoping that the penciled notes aren't too faded. I scanned in the penciled version of this page yesterday, and tried coloring it, so I may post that in the next update.

So yeah.

The Brush May Be Mightier Than The Pen

Seven drawings this time around. It's getting...a little easier to draw when I want to.

Oh hey, look. Color! Brainstorming, up above, and...checking to see if I can draw different faces and heads, since my paranoia's been getting to me.

Studies. I'm now of the opinion that photos of breakdancers (good photos, mind you) are excellent material to do figure studies with. Or maybe I'm deluding myself.

Concepts for a town, plus brainstorming for FUTURISTIC BUILDINGS. Chances are that if I hit a wall with building ideas, I'll just base them off of shapes found in nature. Like the mushroom-shaped power plant.

Story brainstorming, in comic form. I asked a friend if I should draw a talking scene or an action scene, and talking was the response I received. I really have trouble drawing simple talking scenes, and making them...visually interesting. I also have fear that my linework with the brush is too bold or inconsistent, but...eh. People have said it looks fine?

More studies, plus...Batman and Robin. And...well, that's supposed to be Todd Ingram, but something went horribly wrong.

This is my brain vomiting ideas for powers based on zodiac signs. All will yield to the fish-head powers of PISCES...which is so lame. Gemini is much better. I can always make Gemini better.

AND BEHOLD THE MONOWHEEL. Do you know what a monowheel is? You should. And you should care about the MONOWHEEL. Google it. I love monowheels, and I've always failed at trying to draw someone driving/riding one. But tonight, I succeeded.

Lots of comic pages in this update...or at least comic panels, in a few cases.

"Can I draw an action scene?" is what I asked myself. This is what resulted. Am I pleased? Yes. Yes, I am.

This one's a mish-mash. An idea for a character with...a variety of brainstorming bits. Aside from the wall that's breaking apart over on the left.

More comic brainstorming. Also a map to help me ground some ideas about a fictional world.

The end result of me being influenced by an Astro Boy music video was the production of that robot. Then I discovered photos of breakdancers on Flickr.

And this...well, this is Persona 3 fanart. The upper portion with the figure and the cards started out as just a sketch, but then I drew Nyx down below...and modified the above sketch into Ryoji. And the cards became tarot cards from Persona 3/4. I like the way Nyx turned out down below more than Ryoji up above.

ANYWAY. FIVE DRAWINGS.

Triple Strike

Yaaaaaayyy. Miniature, on-time update with three drawings!

And two are comic pages. :D
This one was just of a scene that popped into my head, that I fleshed out in the first panel, not intending to go much further than that, but then it grew to two pages in length. I toyed around with using the brush along with my micron and rollerball pen to ink things...and I was pleased with most of the results, except for the bottom of this page.

...My brush's bristles have been fraying, lately. I'd underestimated how badly screwed-up the brush was, and lines became thick without my intending for them to be thick. OH WELL.

So I kept drawing things...I didn't plan/want this to take up the whole page, but the (sort of) full-body shot of Aruna in mid-transformation prompted me to extend her leg and also add that panel at the bottom-left. I like how this looks.

AND THEN ENVIRONMENTS. That high-tech, sci-fi-looking dome is something that I am quite proud of. I might try coloring it up in GIMP, just to give it the look I want it to have.

So anyway. Three drawings in this post.
That makes 208 drawings total.

Late and Lame

I UPDATED AGAIN.

...Not that I particularly like most of what I've drawn over the past few days.

This page started to be filled after coming off of the Shovel Knight high, but then went into concept sketches for Garlic Gun.

More Garlic Gun: Concept sketches for Count Crow. I remain at a loss as to how to go about giving a vampire with stupid-ridiculous SERAPH HAIR an aesthetically-pleasing "super form."

Character doodles related to another project...and the proportions are off on the first one. :|

More character doodles related to the same project. I'm actually quite pleased with how these look. The dancing figure on the left, in particular. The brush gives me nice line quality...when I'm not being stupid with it.

And these were drawn whilst staring at photos of cosplayers and seagulls off of Flickr. Except for the girl in the bottom-right.
Garlic Gun sketches and a demon. The ox-drawn cart down there is a wonderful idea that popped up into my head while watching Courage the Cowardly Dog.

And this...well, this was from a variety of things. Matthew Patel's entrance in Scott Pilgrim influenced me heavily after I was exposed to his display of MYSTICAL POWERS in the movie the other day. (And I hate Namco-Bandi for making stupid localization choices regarding certain franchises.)

Now, these last two are sketches I made while in dry, scorching heat at the park downtown. The first one I started and finished while at the park, but the second I managed only to pencil a rough sketch. I finished the drawing in ink just tonight. (Using both the rough pencil sketch and my memory.) Both were drawn on full pages of a sketchbook much smaller than the one that the rest of my drawings are from, so I'll count these as half a drawing each.

So...in total, that's eight drawings.

That boosts me up to 205 total drawings.
I should have 227 by today, though.

...So I'm behind by 22. Still. :|

Owls and Brushes

I'm...working so slowly. ;_;

BUT ANYWAY. I've been playing around with using the brush for lines.

I like the results that it's been cranking out. Conceptual sketches for a story idea. Brainstorming, etc.

More of the same. Couldn't figure out how/what to draw in that last panel in the upper-right...

Playing around with the brush again, using some more familiar characters.

I drew this after becoming infatuated with saw-whet owls at the Oregon Zoo. Hooterman/Owlman, however, is the product of a running joke I reference every time my friends and I pass by Hooters.

And this is what I would be in my idealistic vision of the world as a massive Japanese RPG: A Shovel Knight.

And this...this is another owl. Only rendered in watercolor, and much more beautiful than the plain linework owls from earlier. This owl is gorgeous.

SO LET'S SEE HOW MY FAILURE AT WORKING CONSISTENTLY HAS ADDED UP:

Cosplay Crossover, Hands, Birds

Alrighty, well, only four in this update...

Someone told me to draw Avatar fanart. I...I'm not sure what happened, but somehow Steiner from Final Fantasy IX and my fist made it into the page, too.

...I struggle with drawing fanart, a lot of the time.

Studies of hands and birds. The birds invited a bit of playing with inkwashes. I like them quite a bit.

More character design brainstorming. Played with inkwashes and used a brush for linework on the guy over on the left. Doesn't look all that bad.

Watercolors and brainstorming...and Persona 3 fanart. The figure in the bottom, at the center, is an idea for 'spiffing up' my current cosplay plan for Kumoricon...namely the mask and sword.

BUT YEAH. I realized I wrote "Battle Coffin" instead of "Battle Casket," which I had intended...the thing still looks far too phallic for my tastes, but whatever.

Ego Rising

Still...so slow...still...lack of update...lack of drawing.

Must...get on track.

This started as a doodle of a robot. Sonic followed afterwards, then Eggman came up, and then the Servbot came up because the robot reminded me too much of the Gustaff from The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.

Character sketches for the same story idea that's connected back to those landscape sketches.

ANGST ANGST ANGST RAGE ANGST ANGST. This is what I do because I'm uncomfortable making video blogs on Youtube for my discomfort with the world.

I really liked drawing this first panel...and then my effort and enthusiasm dropped as I worked my way down the page. I don't draw close-ups that well.

Also, I hesitate to use my brush and ink to fill in areas of black. I used my brush-tip pen for the next page.

I hate drawing scythes being swung, because it's still a bit difficult for me to envision it...but these don't look so bad. Also, I've realized how wonderful solid black areas are. CONTRAST IS WONDERFUL.

Just two images in today's update. Both are colored landscapes to help me better visualize the world for a story idea that I've got in my head.

This one came about when I started thinking about drawing a night scene. Everyone in this world makes homes out of ruined buildings, hence the cracks and broken bits of architecture there. The above portion was drawn with a broken-down, weathered bridge in mind.

More ideas. Ruins with entrances that can only be entered during low tide.

...although, if that were the case, the whole of the ruins, if it's at a lower elevation than its entrance, would be flooded, right? Maybe I need to think this through some more.

God, I struggled so long trying to think of what colors to use for the ruin sketch.

So two drawings makes the total 181, now.
I SHOULD have 198 by now, though.

...So I'm now behind by 17.

Awe!: The Boy Returns!

Alright, members of the privately-public! This is a long-overdue update for the blog!

You might be wondering why this update is so late, and why I haven't drawn much... Well, in that case, I blame the presence of this man in my family's house for two weeks!:

It's my grandfather. Now that he's back in Hawaii, (along with this portrait of him that I gave to him) I can resume drawing normally...supposing I can focus long enough.

This was a drawing that I tried working on while Grandpa was here. I'm preeetty sure that Afro-Dracula is just something I scribbled-up to fill the page.

Dragons, flying lizards, and...cow-tree-dragon hybrids? It was concept work for a story involving dragons. I was bored during my mother's indoor soccer game, and drew this page up. Dracula makes another appearance.

And this is where I had stopped drawing for a week or so because Grandpa's presence was so stressful. This page had no ink or color on it until just this afternoon. It's concept work for a story idea that came to mind after the dragon idea became boring.

And then this was...this is the result of me trying to get back to drawing shortly after Grandpa returned home. Not too proud of it...
Concept work for another story idea. I'm not sure if the name will stick, but please know that I enjoy combining the wild west with vampires, among other things.

NOW THEN. SPECIAL TREAT. This is the 49th page of my senior project from High School.

And THIS is me redrawing that page after three years have passed. It makes me feel good to feel like I've improved. ;_; OH GOD THE SENSATION OF FULFILLMENT IS SO NICE.

Odd Mix

Haha, so I usually draw in my sketchbook with certain pencils and pens, yeah?

Well, I found myself at a softball game with a notebook and a ballpoint pen. I decided to try sketching with it, and got this.

It isn't...that impressive. The tree was the best thing to come out of it, I think.

The next image is me, with my proper sketchbook and drawing tools, sketching during an indoor soccer game. Much better than the previous drawing.

And then this...I've been drawing on this particular page for some three days now, trying to work on it without being interrupted by family. I finally got it filled today...and I was reminded that the paper in this sketchbook is horrible to try drawing on when I'm using a nib pen.

SKY POLICE.

So yeah. That's three drawings in today's batch.
That makes 172 drawings, total for this year, leaving me with 193 more to go.
Current quota is currently met at 172.

On an unrelated note, I also got a decent amount of sleep, today.

Not that much.

But I decided to try doodle with it anyway, and enjoyed what turned up.

I really, really need to take some more consideration into characters' color schemes, I think...

What doing?

Just three pictures, today. Nothing too unusual.

This first image is just an exercise, using two of my characters. I wanted to see how I could get a simple conversation down into a few panels, after having drawn the action-centric bit during the last update.

The bottom-right isn't actually a panel that's part of the comic.

And this is a combination of some more gestures from the soccer game, some studies, and...

...and "Awesome Lad."

More studies, this time with pencil. I noticed that pencil is much nicer for studies than this rollerball pen. I was tipped off by a friend to try study noses more, so I did a little bit of that. ('Though, not much, admittedly.)

Three Men and a Dragon

So the general concensus from those who responded, whether here or otherwise, was that it'd make sense to include the reproductions toward the total drawing count. Just wanted to note that.

Anyway, my opportunities to draw have been on the paltry side as of late, whether due to homework or the presence of extended family visiting the house for my brother's graduation. Regardless, I do have some work to show.

As a warning, this upcoming one has naked men in it. Three naked men and a dragon. Also, horrible use of pastels.

The drawing comes from my figure drawing class: The model would pose for us three times, and we were supposed to get all three poses down onto a sheet of paper, and draw a background for the whole thing. That was the criteria, and the rest was free game.

Since our model posed with a sword...well...

This next one is actually a drawing I had scanned in, but not posted on this blog. It's character design brainstorming.

This was scanned tonight, and, ironically, is also character design brainstorming. This is actually based on an image from a friend, four years ago, when I had asked friends for early conceptual sketches of superhero alter egoes, based on rough descriptions.

I just revisited the concept and pulled elements out of it for this new design.

And this is playing with action in comic format. With crappy or nonexistent backgrounds.

And these are...very poor gesture drawings (can I call them that?) made while I watched my mother play indoor soccer.

SO YEAH.

8 drawings from before, and 5 in this batch makes 13 drawings unaccounted for thus far.
Added to the 154 drawings from the last count, we have 167 drawings total.

Surprisingly, I should have 165 drawings by today! :D

So I'm ahead by 2 days, covering me up until June 16th.

Figure Drawing Sketchbook

Change of pace with this update: This is actually a quarter-long assignment from my Figure Drawing class, where we're supposed to generate ten reproductions of older (more prominent?) artists' figure drawings/nude studies/etc.

Ten weeks in the quarter, one reproduction per week...and I only have eight reproductions here.

Normally, I wouldn't post this on this blog, but the thing is, we're supposed to turn in our sketchbooks with the reproductions and printouts of the works we reproduced.

My family's printers lack the ink with which to print, and thus, I sought this as an alternative.

So the post layout is simple: The original work is followed by my reproduction.

That thigh on the right is...too big? It got cut off of the page, at any rate.

Again, the right thigh is a problem?

The face.

...The neck?

This was an interesting challenge, using ink washes.

It was about this time that I realized my pencil is, once again, my invaluable partner, as is hatching.

Skimped on the background here, but this was surprisingly fun to redraw. Ink and brush, for this one.

And this one...was very taxing to finish.

I'm not really sure if I should count these toward my 365 drawing goal.

...anyone? I'll listen to any comments posted, whether on here or on facebook, or whatever.

Schoolwork from figure drawing class: Model would pose twice for us, and then we were supposed to fit them both onto the paper in some spatially-sensical manner.

Sketching up ideas for that friend's project...Which involved me finally giving into my idea about giving the hero rocket gloves to execute his special attack.

...even though it was discussed that one of the more prominent villains would be given rocket gloves.

Also, minor design tweaks. Just playing around with ideas.

Not really sure about how everything on this page turned out...I think I'll ignore the bottom-right corner.

And then trying to flesh out another character. It's...it's interesting to look at the shapes of people's noses.

First up is a character height chart. I kept thinking back to images from the Final Fantasy IX art book that had some similar charts in it, with all of the main characters facing forward, positioned so that you could see how they compare to each other visually...

Just ignore the one on the right. I...I didn't think too much about his design.

Bonus for those who can read katakana, I guess.

Action, with a few glaring errors.

But it still feels so good.

Yaaayyyyy. I'm updatiiinnngggg.

And the funny thing is, I skipped some pages from my sketchbook because I feel that they're not worth the effort of scanning innnn~!

Pastel. Just classwork - the only piece that actually turned out well last week. This week doesn't seem to be looking up, with regards to my Figure Drawing class, either.

Quick sketches of bears for personal reference, for...well, you can see for yourselves.

I tried getting myself started on the comic, but I quickly realized I have a great deal of trouble establishing interior shots of houses and buildings...so I need to get on that. Still.

Figured I'd update before I had to try manage a large handful of images in one post...

Anyway, I got some stuff from my figure drawing class, of...varying quality.

Charcoal on self-toned paper, using a kneaded eraser for highlights, with bits of yellow pastel.

Same story for these two. These are from today, though. I might get a higher-quality image of the really dark-looking drawing. Lighting wasn't exactly the best.

SO YEAH. That Little Red Riding Hood idea? It's consumed my mind. I figured I'd change my rendition of Little Red around a bit, so that she didn't resemble BB Hood all that much.

My solution, though...kind of badly drawn here.
Well, really badly drawn here...
...my solution was to give her robotic arms and legs.

Ideas about her grandmother, and short ideas about her hairstyle. Also some quick sketches of wolves to get an idea for what their heads are shaped like.

Some sketches of faces, including Stan Lee, at the top-right.

MegaMan doodles, fingertip guns...ideas for the Big Bad Wolf.

More sketches of Little Red and the wolf. More vicious rendition is in pen. I'll probably draw up some comic pages, soon. I think this miniature project will make for good practice and warm-up for me.

Advent of Red Hoods

So I kind of almost fell behind again.

More accurately, I almost fell behind being behind, almost becoming more late than I already was?

I've got more to post...or, well, I -will- have more to post once I get photos of my work from my figure drawing class.

ANYWAAAAY. MOVING ON.

All of this page is for projects with friends, come to think of it. The top half is for a website I'm conbtributing to. (Or, well...eh, I guess that's the simplest way to put it?) The bottom half is for the project of the friend I mentioned in my last post. Not...entirely sure about how happy I am with the results?

A touched-up version of the space pod. (Not counting this as a separate image, just putting it out here.)

Just doodling of Casshern. Or at least as much as I can remember of Casshern without a reference in front of me. This was done at school, so...no computer I can readily use.

More for the previously mentioned project! The main character. I kind of tweaked a few bits of his design here and there, trying to differentiate him from Captain Falcon a bit more. But then I got bored and decided to draw him in Viewtiful Joe proportions, and diving down punching at someone (something?).

Originally, this was for the same project: Trying to come up with faces for other characters, but only really came out with one I was satisfied with. Then I decided to try draw a bird and a squirrel.

So last Friday, I was watching a friend (same one who I'm creating designs for) play Batman: Arkham Asylum. One of Batman's abilities in the game is a really useful X-ray vision that lets him see through walls, and identify enemies and allies. We forgot to use this when we were jumping over an ambulance in a new area...and were promptly shot by enemies with guns.

It needed chronicling.

Just a lot of random drawings - I'd read something about fighting in the bakery section of a grocery store using baked goods, and drew up the baker. Everything else just dropped into place, including that quick sketch of the Tokyo Metropolitan Office in the upper right.

Last night, I had this idea to make a really badass Little Red Riding Hood, running around with guns and explosives, beating the snot out of anything and everything that opposed her. I decided to follow up on the idea in my free time today, and produced this and the next drawing.

...But then I realized that my idea is a really, really borderline copycat of BB Hood from Darkstalkers. God damn it.

WELL, WHATEVER. That's it for this update.

Well, look! Two posts in one day, and both with multiple drawings!

So I recently realized that I hadn't followed the concept art for one of my characters accurately at all, and decided to try working with a design closer to the original concept art. What emerged was a pose that is probably very painful to maintain.

I tried it myself, but I don't know if that counts for much.

The same idea drove me to this page - trying to nail that design down...Granted, when I drew this and the other page, I didn't have the original concept art with me, so I'm not sure what the purpose of this was.

And this is for a friend's project! I was tasked with giving visual form to his characters, and...well, I've slacked off terribly at this task. I feel a lot more confident in what I can do now, so I figured I'd take another shot at it, especially since I've become involved with other parts of his project as well...

It occurs to me that while I have fun drawing comical expressions on men's faces, it's very difficult for me to do the same with women's faces.

WELL. Four drawings in this batch.

Uploading some more material from my figure drawing class. All but one image are from past weeks.

This was done with charcoal.

And this is...well, the paper was made into makeshift midtone paper with charcoal, and then a black color pencil and a kneaded eraser were used for shadows and highlights, respectively.

And this is inkwash, applied with, well...a brush, obviously. This one's from yesterday. Not too happy with...the foot in the foreground.

Still breaking that new sketchbook in. Working from a lot of photo references in some desperate attempt to improve my understanding of...

...actually, what I'm trying to achieve by doing this is beyond me, but with any luck, I'll see an improvement somewhere. Maybe. Possibly. With hope.

...and I won't even delve into the errors in the faces here. The figure on the left turned out fairly nicely, though.

So I took a shot at trying to draw stylistically, after a night of drawing from photos off of Flickr, and...I was severely disappointed while I struggled to consistently an accurately depict the face of one of my characters. EVERYTHING IS A FAILURE. EVERYTHIIIIINGGGGGG

So I awoke today, and decided to try drawing before doing anything else...which ended mostly in frustrated failure that emerged only after I stopped drawing the faces of Japanese people. Make of that what you will.

Gotta keep drawing, gotta keep drawing!

So, between the last update and now, I broke in a new sketchbook.

This is from yesterday - just doodling a character...and realizing I seem to enjoy drawing people who are about six heads tall.

From my figure drawing class, some time earlier this month. I'll probably upload more from the class, depending on how much I like the work I've produced there...

From the new sketchbook, and probably the first of many misshapen faces with noses that are too long, that consequently stretch the face vertically and distort it.

THAT IS A VESPA. IT IS A SUPERIOR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION.
More faces...and I should probably stop using this rollerball pen for this kind of thing, and use my microns for it instead. Also, my current profile picture from facebook is in this one. Well, a drawing of it, anyway.

Overcoming A Block

The past few weeks have been unproductive and frustrating.

Or at least, the recent few weeks have been. As a result, I have sparse few drawings to share. However, since it's been a while since I last posted, I figure it would be a good idea to post what I have so far.

This is actually an older comic page I doodled up a long while back earlier this year, but didn't post for some reason or another. Might have to do with the horrendous, eye-gougingly-wrong proportions on the last panel.

Hand studies, and attempting to work with foreshortening. With poor results.

More hand studies.

A failed hand study, complete with self-depreciative remarks, and a drawing of a rabbit from a photograph.

Playing with watercolors while listening to the soundtrack of Fradile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon.

I actually struggled with this page until I drew up the girl...and quickly applied watercolor soon after.

In lieu of the last watercolor image, I tried it with two more of my characters.

And then another two.

And then I doodled up some other character designs...

Playing with inkwashes on a comic page. Mixed results...

And this page marks the beginning of my period of recent frustration. Something about faces, hands, and bodies became an incredible struggle for me, and nothing seemed to be working right.

Also, the "Dogs aren't primates" bit is clipped from my own life - from my psychology class.

I got this idea to try draw an action scene. So I tried...but then I realized that I don't have any idea about how to render action in a comic, let alone how to draw a scythe being used to attack someone.

...which brought me to try drawing-up the various ways a scythe COULD be used. I can't say that this was...particularly helpful, though. Or realistic.

Another attempt at an action scene, and I gave up before finishing, because everything just looks...well, horrible and wrong. I think the past two penciled comic pages and the scythe poses add together to maybe two images total.

...I won't acknowledge the comic pages alone as counting toward my image count.

So, a few days ago, I decided to try take another shot at drawing, despite my frustration with my abilities, and just drew faces. To my delight, everything seemed to be working out well.

And so I continued, the next day.

And then this was drawn up today. At the rate I'm going, I'll be back to speed in no time. :D

So...well, let's see how far behind I am.

Lack of Productivity During Spring Break

Alright. I've fallen behind again. In the process, I reveal to the world the horrible, self-depreciative nature of my frustration when I reach wall in my work.

So, the first image. The bottom-left signifies the beginning of a challenge from a fellow artist to try drawing without relying so much on a rough outline or sketchwork of the final product.

It seemed like a good thing to try: Something that I've turned into a crutch is my need to sketch out a whole body and figure before adding any details to it. The figure often looks like a low-polygon computer model, staggered in some awkward position. As a result, my drawings tend to be static and lacking in flow.

Taking up the challenge would mean trying to draw with just a pen. Unerasable, permenant pen. For someone like me who has trouble transferring the images in my head onto the paper in nothing but properly-executed pen strokes, this...became a problem.

The majority of the pages where I attempted this are filled not with images, but self-hatred for my HORRIBLE, REPULSIVE FAAAAAAAILUUUUREEEEE.

FEEL FREE TO SKIP THE NEXT FIVE THUMBNAILS! :D

We now resume the normal flow of the world.

So, that's that. :D Those two pages probably add up to 2 actual images to my total count.

Eventually, I cooled off, and took another shot at it, and the results were pretty good. Maybe, during my five earlier attempts, I wasn't breathing, or hunched over in such a way that my brain was oxygen-deprived, causing me to become enveloped in ALL-CONSUMING RAGE.

Because I came out with some nice stuff for the next few attempts.

Also, Kubo Tite in the next image. The stuff in the upper-left was done without a reference photo of him, but Kupo Tite the cursed moogle spawn in the bottom-left was made with a reference photo. Ignore the child-stealing vampire with the disproportionate body.

Between the last image and this one, I started writing up material for a new story involving magical swords. So this was design brainstorming. When drawing, I tried blending the "no figure sketching" with my usual process. Pencilwork has thus been left in the drawings after they were inked.

And more brainstorming.

This was plain doodling. Played with drawing a hand grasping something, in a close-up.
What bothers me is how phallic the tube looks.

More design brainstorming for that story I mentioned.

Between that drawing and this one, I purchased a used copy of "The Art of Final Fantasy IX," and after staring at the cover for a while, wanted to take a shot at using watercolors to color my pictures.

I think I got some nice results.

Sure doesn't keep the paper from warping, though. Gotta do something to stop that...

Taking Advantage of Freedom

Long, long-overdue update. Lots of pictures, and many count for multiple days. My drawing time was broken up and rationed sparingly in lieu of assignments piling up.

That aside, we begin with a boy flying on top of a giant bird. (Or a tiny boy riding on a normal-sized bird's back?) I had a lot of fun with that upper-left corner. The kid kind of reminds me of Chuckie, from Rugrats.
The next drawing is a direct product of Jet Grind Radio's title screen music, "The Concept of Love." Both characters were drawn up on different days, so we have two drawings here. I sure do enjoy using ink washes for transparent visors.

And hand studies, even when, well, I should probably be focusing on more than just hands in the alarmingly-few studies I work on.

And we've got a monster that probably can't eat anything because of the placement of teeth in its mouth -

And robots, a Casshern ripoff, and the soundless musical uses of a broom.

Another two-day image...Top was one day, bottom was another. Pumpky and Straw Man's relationship feels familiar to me. Oddly familiar.

And a handful of faces. This...this is probably another way that I go about venting during bad days. KAWAII DESU DESU DERP DERP derp derp...

And another two-day split: Playing with bodies, expressions, and poses.

And another split: the Igor ripoff in the upper-right, and the seashell, were from one day, while the rest was on another.

Another split: All but the origami monster were drawn on one day, and then the origami monster followed on another.

And then one last day split: Monsters, possibly of the RPG variety. Everything but that serpent, the doll, and the little knight where drawn on one day. I'm pretty proud of the hourglass and candle monsters.

Well, let's total this all up... 17 drawings, in this batch. Brings me up to 72 total.

31 days in January, 28 in February...59 plus the 12 days gone by in March thus far...Equals 71.

Yeah, that should be about right, I think. o_O

So that puts me one day ahead, covered up through March 13th! Sweet.

So with 72 drawings total, I've got 293 more to go.

(...Even if my math is wrong, I'll still have a surplus of drawings, so it ain't all bad. Although, I really need to figure out a standard method to counting the drawings I do. Something's iffy about the way I'm doing it now.)

The most fun came out of the four panels in the bottom-left. But the number of details here, especially in my dear little grotesque monster, is laaaacking. By a lot.

If my guesses are right, I'm still behind...especially since I seriously slacked off on the weekend.
Anyhow: First up, we've got the drawing I'd been meaning to give some color to since two weeks ago. This was on the same page as the four-armed guy and the crappy robot with a gun-arm. I really should've used references for the trees, or tried changing-up the background to something more...compelling.

Next are just some doodles of a man consuming a squirrel, and more playing with ink washes...with ill progress.

Next up is just more doodling...'though I did have a fun time working out the details - 'specially that 'core' - on the robot.

This one's actually two images: Simon, from Gurren Lagann, was drawn on the same day as the robot up above. The rest followed on the next day..."the rest" including that poorly-hatched drawing of some lame Indiana Jones knockoff.

And more robots followed. The 'wings' on the anatomically-incorrect figure on the bottom portion were pulled from some doodles I was making in my notes during an Astronomy class. I rather like them.

And this is something that I don't think I want to be known for, but...well, apparently when I'm in a bad mood, I draw grotesque-looking creatures.

So, let's add this up: 7 drawings...

Posting with some color

Alright. I've got four drawings today.
First up is something I drew on Friday of last week...only half of the page, though. The other half is still being worked on. Coloring it and such, since I finished inking that other half today. Anyway, from what we do have here, ignore the visually-boring robot.
This was from...well, I forget when. Tuesday, I guess. The only thing of real interest is in the upper-left corner. The bottom left was used to hastily try cramming for a quiz on muscles in one of my classes. The rest was just experiments with how interesting I can make a close-up of a face look.
The next image was from yesterday, Wednesday. Started listening to Nana Mizuki's 'Crystal Letter,' and drew up the sunset scene. The rest was finished later into the evening, and turned into an ink wash experiment...not too happy with the results in the bottom panel, though. Close-ups and foreshortening are still a real challenge for me.

Moving on, we're at today's drawing...which more or less turned into experiments with ink washes again. I'm really pleased with the INTENSE RAGE face at the middle-left.

Aaanyway, I should have three drawings to show for tomorrow.
...So, let's see. This brings me up to 47 drawings, total.
I'm behind by two days, then, as I should have had 47 by February 16th.

Regardless, I've 318 more to go.

Another Set

Alright. Another group of images. This first one was actually from the bottom of the 'Mecha Sheriff' image. Well, same page as it, but on the bottom portion.

Then during the following day at school, I drew up the guy standing on the left. Only a few days later did I get the rest of the page filled. So this one's two images in one.

The next two images are seperate, but off of the same page and done on different days. The dragon here, I started on immediately after drawing up the guy in the upper-left of the previous image.

Everything on the rest of the page came days afterwards. Including my Giraffrog. Or Frogaffe. Or Giratoad.
Then yesterday involved experimenting with the uses of inkwashes.
Aaaand this last one, chronologically speaking, should go before the previous image. I submitted this comic to my college's annual art magazine. No idea if it'll get in, but after I scanned it, I touched it up with inkwashes prior to submitting it.

This one was finished yesterday, for the most part, but I added some finishing touches this morning.

Hand studies...most of which didn't go well. :\

Hand study again, which left my left hand's pinky feeling cramped as Hell when I finished drawing.

And this was finally colored in moments ago. Looks a lot more impressive small than it does up close...but then, so do a lot of things. Maybe I should've tried putting the whole thing in shades of blue and purple?

It's pretty good for the first comic page I've drawn in a few months, which kind of disgusts me in a way, since...I can do better than this. :|

At any rate, I'm pleased by everything except the knight in the second panel. A number of things are wrong with him in the second panel. His left hand looks hideous, and his neck seems too long.

Haha, a day overdue, aren't I?

Well, regardless, I've three new drawings. Rather pleased with most of them.

More brush experimentation with the jumping kid. I felt like trying to draw a single scene, one single frozen moment in an actual setting...as sparse as that setting may be. Overall, I liked how this one turned out, even if that cat doesn't look much like a cat, and the girl's left (her left) arm is out of proportion with the hand of that arm.

This next image was a "play day" for me, for the most part.

I learned how difficult it is to make Sonic seem full of life, and then started playing with my color pencils... later in the day, I got down to experimenting with the brush again.

The next day, I felt like trying to draw "a villain."

...and came up with this "Evil King" guy. I started with his face, then went on to draw up his body, which...eh, is a good bit shorter than he ought to be, actually. But regardless, I feel that he meets good "villain" standards. Everything else on the page came about because of him.

Trio Three

Haha, cutting it rather close with this one, aren't I?

Well, let's see...started drawing this one on Sunday, and finished it up sometime on Monday...

Rather pleased with the jumping guy, even if his eyepatch is...being worn the wrong way. The face beneath the guy also looks...kind of wonky. Oh well.

...So then I got started on a wild west theme. I felt like trying to do more with arms and hands, using poses that I stubbornly avoid out of laziness or embarassment, and forced myself to work with them.

The end result was rather nice. I got a woman who looks like a woman, and a man who actually looks like he's shooting me. Sadly, the woman's hand holding the derringer (and the derringer itself) are misshapen, and the cowboy's left pinky finger is apparently broken. Sad day.

...Aaaaand then we come to today: Yesterday, the guy I sit next to in one of my classes kept talking about crusaders. I figured like playing with that idea.

And I got DOUBLE-CRUSADER.

When I got home, I played with the new brush I got from Art Media, and the result of that is down at the bottom of the page. Isn't too bad, I think.

Triple Serving

Haha, well, I'm a bit late, here...
Friday, the 7th, I had a lot of free time before my first class, so I started drawing in my sketchbook. The result is what you see below.

...as you can see, my work with drawing hands hasn't quite paid off, when drawing things out of my head. Then again, that could easily be the result of me not thinking things through and also not having a solid grasp of anatomy, still.

Anyway, later that day, I drew in my sketchbook again, after my class finished.

A comment that struck me, from a classmate who was passing me by and peeked into my sketchbook, was along the lines of, "You draw too much of the same stuff."

Well, that's true. I still have a lot of work to do in order to get past that. The drawing that I actually do lately seems to be habitual stuff, following the same formulas over and over and getting the same drawings.

So then Saturday whirled around.
Yeah. Saturday was pretty awesome.

Well, these three drawings* bring us up to 13 total.

Blue Hand

I was waiting for the lounge in the art building to clear out, so I sat down and started drawing this...started with the hand you see outlined in black behind the hand rendered in blue. Second came the hand on the right, then the hand rendered in colors.

...There's still something I'm sorely missing, here. I'm either not approaching this the right way, or I haven't wrapped my head around this yet.

Maybe I should be working on drawings out of my head in conjunction with these studies.

Regardless, we're up to 10 drawings, now.

Lateness

No post last night? I feel like I'm falling behind.

I scribbled something up and finished it at 11:00 PM last night, but it's pretty disappointing. Look at that horrible hand and those terrible legs...

Truth is, I did draw yesterday during the day, only...it turned out to be crap. I was going to try draw my eraser sitting on top of the stub of another eraser, and render it in oranges and yellows, but like I said, it turned out to be crap. I used the same page for my drawing today.

That guy lying on his side, on the bottom of this page? Yeah, I was drawing him...then this girl comes and sits across the table from me, completely blocking that guy from view. As a result...I couldn't draw the rest of him.

Eh, the legs and torso look out of proportion anyway...

Well, anyway...

The Eraser Has Color

Well, school's started.

Had a little over an hour to spare before my first class, so I started drawing my hand.

First one didn't turn out too well, second one seemed okay, and the third was horrible.

Then I decided to try draw my eraser, over in the bottom left.

...Just what am I even accomplishing by working through these? Something tells me I'm going about this the wrong way, or I'm not doing something quite right...

Anyway. That's 7 drawings total, now.

Colors?

Today could've been productive, but alas, it was not.

So I opted to try using a brush for my linework, and got this.

(EDIT: OH GOD, WHY DID I DATE THIS THING THE 1ST OF JANUARY? IT'S THE THIRD. THE THIRD, GOD. )

...Doesn't feel too bad, but then you start noticing that horribly-bent pen.

No, I didn't use a straightedge, and I probably should have.

Oh well. Hey, look. Color.

Drool Warning

Originally, I started today drawing Persona 3 fanart, but got sidetracked when I realized I hadn't eating anything. When I got around back to drawing, I decided to draw myself instead.

So we've got two drawings today: Hands and faces.

(EDIT: Guess who still keeps writing '2009' out of habit when he dates things?)

TODAAAAAAAAY'S LESSON: Drawing myself with my mouth wide open leaves me at risk of drooling on my own pants.

2010 Has Begun!

O' glorious day!

I type this while functioning on 4 hours of sleep, wrought by trying to stay up to witness the first dawn of the new year. Instead, I awoke at around 10:00 to beautiful sunlight. I enjoyed that much, at least.

So, 'round 7:30 or 8, I got to drawing in my sketchbook.

And here's the result.

The two comic panel-looking bits in the upper-left were penciled some number of days ago, but I never got around to inking them. I started off drawing the three girls over on the right, and just took off from there.

(Man, I suck at rendering girls' hair...amongst a bunch of other things.)

I threw Dr. Tenma into the bottom left because I felt the urge to add a glasses-wearing man somewhere, and it filled the empty white void.

(EDIT: Specifically, it's the rendition of Dr. Tenma from the manga, "Pluto." That's why he looks...kind of like Gendo Ikari?)

Also, as a side note, I realized a few weeks ago that I never draw on both sides of the pages in my sketchbook. This is (or was, now) because I was always afraid of drawings smearing and ruining each other due to pages rubbing against each other.

I figured a way to circumvent this would be to just ink everything that I drew on the pages' backsides. I think when I fill this sketchbook up entirely, (and hey, I essentially double my drawing space) I'll have that many more drawings to be entertained by.

ANYWAY. It's January 2nd, now.

Haha, well, nothing too impressive, here...my first time drawing a tiger, as far as I know. Used reference pictures off of Google. Scribbled it after seeing a bunch of Chinese New Year's stuff around Uwajimaya.

(EDIT: "TiGEr." If I ever put anything in bubble letters, and there's an I, you can bet it'll be lower-case.)

Color...color wouldn't be a bad thing, now would it?

One For Each Day

I'm not entirely sure why I decided to go along with this.

I doubt I'll even keep this going for even a whole month.

Regardless, I'll make an attempt: One drawing for each day of the year, archived here in this blog.

There will be, at the least, 365 drawings in this blog, from me. I may not post each day, and some posts will contain more than one image.

But there will be at least 365 drawings.

So, I'll let this first one cover January 1st for me.
